D4 Light flashes

hey, can anyone help me? i have a 98 integra rs (automatic), anyhow, my D4 light flashes all the time, adn my check engine light is on. Has anyone ever encountered this before? It's a little rough sometimes when its changing gears, and my gas mileage is terrible. Any help would be appreciated.

WildoutWhiteGSR 11-01-2005 01:43 PM

check the engine code

www.team-integra.net has a how-to

then tell us what code it is

nfintegra 11-01-2005 01:51 PM

I think that it is a transmission code. I remember reading in the manual that it is a problem with the transmission. There is a symptoms chart to go with it, certain conditions with either the light flashing or off. Is the tranny acting weird, not downshifting, slow upshifts, hunting between gears, or no overdrive?

AcuraGirl 11-01-2005 03:29 PM

it doesnt seem like there is any real problem with my tranny, its just kinda hesitates every once in a while when shifting

FuzzyLS BRO 11-01-2005 04:05 PM

try changing the transmission fluid, that would be the first place to start.

Buff4Prez Yo 11-01-2005 05:09 PM

Sarah i think it's your Vehicle Speed Sensor i'll take a look at it for you

-Azarro- 11-01-2005 05:12 PM

i have the EXACT same problem. my D4 light flashes but the check engine dont come on. the check engine comes on when the sspeedo dont work. but thats another problem altogether and should go away when i swap the engine. anyhow i think that its the transmission and sooner or later it will start to slip. like i know my tranny is fcucked right now whenever i make sharp turns it goes up to high rpms. and i know there is something wrong but i dont care to fix it...just because this tranny and engine is gone next season. but other then that get your tranny checked out...it will get worse

AcuraGirl 11-02-2005 07:45 AM

thanks for your help guys

its me.. mario 11-02-2005 07:48 AM

my 91 prelude does this.. flashes the D4 and the stupid speedo stops working..

AcuraGirl 11-02-2005 09:10 AM

its just so weird because my car dosnt drive any differently, nothing stop working or anything, it drives me crazy!

high-octane 11-02-2005 11:31 PM

my d4 light does not work. Think its a blown bulb? any idea?

AcuraGirl 11-04-2005 07:49 AM

Well I took my car to Acura last night to get them to diagnose the problem and they said I need a whole new transmission! I just don't believe it, this light in my car has been on for 2 years, and I haven't had a problem, how could I need a new tranny?? The codes they got from my car were..

P0700 - Automatic transmission control
P0715 - Problem in mainshaft speed sensor circuit
P0730 - Problem in shift control system

Don't you think with all those problems, that I would notice something wrong with the car??

high-octane 11-04-2005 09:54 AM

Sometimes replacing just one sensor would solve all the other problems.
Since i see this being a common problem, I’m sure someone will reply you with a better answer and solution.
As for the Acura killer ship....they just want to make the most out of you.

AcuraGirl 11-04-2005 10:10 AM

should i replace my vehicle speed sensor?

high-octane 11-04-2005 10:15 AM

wooooww...slow down!
we want to be sure of everything before replacing any sensors... Just hang in there, some one should come up with a more definate answer.

high-octane 11-04-2005 10:18 AM

some questions...
When was the last time you got a tranny flush? what fluid did you use? did you use honda ATF fluid? where did you get this done?

AcuraGirl 11-04-2005 12:22 PM

I have never had that done. I believe it was done when I bought my car. I have only put 60,000k's on it. Does it need to be done again?

high-octane 11-04-2005 10:57 PM

ok, do me a favor...
Check the transmission fluid level. If you do not know how to do it (not trying to be sexist here....my sister doesn’t know either), have your dad, bf, uncle, friend etc check it.
It is also mentioned in the car manual how to check it.
report back with color of the fluid..it it reddish pink or brownish?
any burnt smell?
How many km do you have on your car?

nbk 11-05-2005 02:36 AM

have u checked ur o2 sensors. my engine light use to come on cuz my o2 sensors were in terrible condition

Buff4Prez Yo 11-05-2005 02:41 AM

or her b/f's brother can check it :D...Sarah Call me when you get a chance or just pass by the house

she took it to acura and they said she needed a new transmission...i think she has just over 100,000 km on her car.

high-octane 11-05-2005 08:22 AM

im thinking its the fluid..."ALWAYS use honda ATF fluid, costs little more..but in the long run its worth it, " or its the speed sensor.
Buff4Prez, do let us know what was the issue!

Dave YO 11-05-2005 05:13 PM

umm that light means its time for a 5 speed swap

AcuraGirl 11-06-2005 10:54 AM

Haha you sound just like Mike, he said do a 5 speed swap too haha.
I looked at my tranny fluid, its a redish colour, no weird smells or anything.
I have called Acura's customer care, and if I can provide all my maintenance receipts fro my car, they will consider replacing my tranny for me since I still have low k's on my car. I let you know what happens with them.

AcuraGirl 11-06-2005 10:56 AM

I actually did have my tranny flushed once at Jiffy Lube and they didn't use that ATF fluid, but the light was on before that. Hopefully that didn't wreck my car even more.

high-octane 11-06-2005 12:24 PM

Let us know how it goes with the killer ship.
Also, my experience tells me that Honda and Acura have a very picky transmission, if you don’t use the recommended fluid...it wrecks it...oil seals get eaten up, build up of sludge, improper shifting etc. All this info was gathered from other sites such as TI (before I even knew about TI), when my friend was having a transmission problem. It wasn’t the D4 light flashing but sometimes it would shift improperly, late ----, would not down shift etc. When we switched to ATF, it solved the problem 100%.
If you planning to buy the ATF fluid, get it from Honda its cheaper…and it’s the same it you would get from Acura (same bottle, packaging name etc). I guess when you walk into the Acura killership all they hear is chaaachinngg!

AcuraGirl 11-06-2005 04:54 PM

ok thanks, im gonna get it flushed again and put that ATF fluid in it before Acura gets their hands on it again haha. If they see that Dextron tranny fluid in there, they may not help me out haha.

high-octane 11-06-2005 08:44 PM

Pls dont blame me if it doesnt fix the problem. :-(

Buff4Prez Yo 11-06-2005 08:47 PM

as long as she has the proper fluid in there at the time they can't say anything

high-octane 11-06-2005 08:54 PM

hey Acura girl,
i had msged someoen with your problem, he was having the same issue.."D4 light flashing" ..this is what i got....
" I dried the ECU and the light stopped flashing after that, the code that I was getting was an ecu code so that fixed it. Your problem might be different"

I think reseting the ECU after u do the flush would be a good idea!

AcuraGirl 11-07-2005 08:36 AM

hey thanks again for your help...i will try that

AcuraGirl 11-08-2005 07:59 AM

Ok, so I have talked to Acura and they are not gonna help me out with this because I can not provide them a receipt of having my tranny flushed at 48000k's. So I guess I will have to start looking for a new tranny, but I might just try the speed sensor first.

high-octane 11-08-2005 09:00 PM

did you do a trany flush and rset the ecu?

AcuraGirl 11-09-2005 08:42 AM

Im going this weekend to get my tranny flushed, and I don't know how to reset the ecu. I can get a speed sensor for found a place that I can get a speed sensor for $278. Do you think I should try and replace it, or just keep driving my car the way it is since I don;t see any problem with it at all.

high-octane 11-09-2005 09:27 AM

Hello Acuragirl,
Getting the tranny flushed is a good idea. Please make sure you get the Honda ATF fluid...if you don’t get this, it is no use doing the flush. 278$ for the speed sensor seems to be a little steep. Have you shopped around for this?
Also, in your next post, pls explain a little more on what exactly happens with your tranny. Is it just the D4 light? Does it shift irregular? Do you hear any grinding or squeaking noises?
Resetting the ECU, it is very simple...however i am not sure if you are the DIY kind of person who doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty once in a while. If so, post back and I shall give you step by step instructions.

I will be getting my tranny flushed at Honda, so im sure htey will use the proper fluid. As for my tranny, no there is nothing noticably wrong with it. I don't hear any noises, it doesn't slip or anything like that. The only reason I had it checked was because of the light being on, that's why I was so shocked that they are telling me it's my whole transmission. This light has been on for 2 years! When it first came on, i took it to my mechanic (not acura), and he told me it was my speed sensor, and that it didn't really matter how quickly I replaced it. I called Acura to see how much the part was, and they quoted me $400, so I decided to just leave it alone. I now have the money to go have it fixed, so I bring it to Acura who says they wont sell me the part with a warranty unless the diagnose the problem themselves, and im assuming they will tell me the same thing as the other mechanic which would be "you need to replace your speed sensor", but no, i got "you need to replace your whole transmission". I have called around for his part at scrap yards and stuff, but no one seems to have one, and its a dealer part only. I finally foudn a place who can order dealer parts at cost with a small mark up which is $278.
As for resetting the ECU, I probably wont do it myself, but if you can give me instructions, I can get someone to do it for me.

high-octane 11-11-2005 09:58 AM

acuragirl..., I know u wanted to do this on the weekend…so here is a link on how to reset the ecu ....LINK . I got this from TI. Keep me posted on how it turns out!

If I were you...I would just drive the car until the trany dies...cause fixing it is as costly as buying a new transmission. Talking about transmissions ... I found out that "Mr. Transmission " do a free check up. Not sure how good they are though!

AcuraGirl 11-11-2005 01:40 PM

that was me, but it was a completely different problem. My light started flashing after the flood back in August and some water had gotten inside my car. When I read the code it said it was an ECU malfunction. Removed the ECU from the car and let it dry for a day, reinstalled and I haven't had a problem since.

Now with these engine codes/transmission codes, they give you a pretty good idea of what's happening. I poked around on the net for your problem and it could possibly be a problem with the TCM (transmission control module). Definitely change your transmission fluid though as the first step, it's cheap and it's long overdue. If you continue having problems passed that, maybe try swapping the TCM with a known good one
