Curb Rash...
 

so i have a set of rims, one rim has some curb rash, the clear coat is peeling so im planning to do a polish on them like, fuzzman, did in his DIY : Polishing Rims, just wondering what process i would have to do to fix the curb rash? would the same process for the polish work ie. sanding it down or something?

The curb rash has to be grinded smooth before you can do anything to it.

^did you even read any of the post? he wants to polish them so using bondo/any kind of filler would not give a desirable result...

depending how bad the curb rash is... youll grind down the aluminum to smoothen it out
using a file.. or like some 60 grit on like a palm sander something like that...

And if you knew anything about bondo, you would know not to use it on rims, as it will crack when you hit a bump, just common sense.

Lmao, you dont grind a rim.

And yes, you do use bondo. Its special bondo that comes in a tube and its only for rims. Its an epoxy type(spot putty). I used it on my rims, and they have been find for 2 years.

If he wants to fix curb rash, its ither fix it and no polish, or polish and dont fix it.

There is no other way you can fix it. you cant grind it, you cant jb weld it.

the hell you cant use JBWELD yes you can and sure hell better than bondo what kind of bondo is that is it 2 part that you have to mix? if not its ---- anything that dosnt need a hardner isnt even worth using
and sure you can grind the rim of the rim why not? well depending how bad but you can sure grind down a coupe of mills of the aluminum down to get it even again depends how bad

when polishing do i need a wax to use after the mothers polish ? i read that some poeple have used a wax to seal and protect, but which kind would you use? if you need to that is..

^^you do not grind rims, thats correct, but if there is a rash you use filler before you paint to even it out. now if its a minor rash, you can shape the rash into something that would blend in "smoother" that just having a rash. then polish that out.

cool video but i didnt mean to use a die grinder like that i ment something like 60 grit emery cloth like ---- on a palm sander and that will grind / sand the aluminum very nicely and evenly

btw in the video he still "grinded" the wheel making it spin like a lathe is that not what its called? meh w/e

Great video, I got a bit on my rims curb rash and oxidization..lol, cant spell. I m just wondering if I can get away with not taking off the tires...might be a silly question but dont know??

How bad is the rash? Is there a lot missing? Cuz you could just smoothen it out by shapping the rash into original shape and just polish that. Yes that part will be lower than others but as long as its just a small rash it won't be too noticible.
Oxydation can't be removed by sanding or paint stripper.

---- big debate on this one i say send it to a place that does rim restoration such as carcones or find a place many places do it i think carcones charges around $110 a rim with taking the tire off and on again $80 with tire off.
