Default corosion around battery terminals?

I remember learning about this back in high school mechanics, but its been a while. I was just wondering what causes that powdery stuff you see around the battery terminals/connectors sometimes? and what can you do to prevent it from happening?

I know they sell a preventative spray, not sure if it's at crappy tire or not. They also have a cleaner. I think what usually starts the corrosion someone correct me if I'm wrong, is moisture.

Yup Cj is right, I'd also like to add that you can use a metal bristal brush to clean it up, they also have a spray.
