Clunking when shifting?
hi when i shift especially in 1st or 2nd, my car makes a sudden jerk and makes clunking noises, what can it be? i have to really ease out the clutch and gas to avoid this, what do you guys think it is?

Sounds like your synchros might be shot. They're not synching the gears up before they mesh and thus jerking your car as they mesh at different speeds.

i dont know but i dont think its sychros, because when i downshift without blimping it is pretty fine, it is mostly when i upshift
|
Hmmm... but it only happens in those 2 gears?
|
no some times 3rd too and 4th it all depends on how you smoothen out your feet.

One way to find out if it is the synchros is to double clutch on your upshifts (clutch out of gear and release clutch in neutural, re-clutch and shift into higher gear) you will probably find that it won't clunk, proving that it is your synchros. time for a tranny rebuild |
what causes synchro damages?

as far as I know; Overheating, under-clutching, quick shifts and powershifting (no clutch) |
^thanks ill keep that in mind
|
yea but it were synchos it would really also have a hard time downshifting, if the sychros were truly shot then you would have to rev match both up and downshift, and i tested out my sychros by putting them thru alot of stress(revving really high and downshifting/ revving really low and upshifting) the sychros seem fine, can loose drive shafts or un-machined flywheel or improper clutch bearing cause this?

Are you certain noise is coming from the transmission? Maybe you have loose or torn mounts.
Just a thought otherise I understand your concern with the synchros not making sound on downshift. I usually find thats when its most noticable... Bring car to Acura and a a mechanic take it for a quick spin. |
