Clicking, metal sound when turning steering wheel.

When i give it like a a good half a turn either way there is this metal clunking/ clicking sound. It sounds like clunk clunk and thats it, when i turn it back it makes another clunk clunk. lol.. what is it MOST likely. I can't really check anything as I have no tools so I am asking but I don't want to waste mechanic's time diagnosing.

I think I have heard someone saying this before and my friends mustang had the same thing it turned out to be the balljoints. If you got to replace one do them both.

Am I right guys or can someone help our fellow ti'er out?

Well where is the sound coming from? Is it only at that one specific place when the steering wheel turns? It could be as simple as the cover over the steering column touching it. That's ofcourse if its from inside.

Does it do it when you are moving? Hitting pot holes?

Btw, no need to do both ball joints if the other one is fine. Don't replace parts that don't need replacing.

If the noise is coming from the front end it would be a good idea to jack up the car, and check for any play. Grab the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and check for play, this is for tie rods. Then 12 and 6 o'clock to check for lower ball joint.
Check all joint boots for cuts or rips in tie rod ends and lower/upper ball joints.
Then report back ;)

What Martin said.

Just did both my front lower ball joints. Only one was bad, but did them both while I was at it. Not overly expensive and if you're doing the work your self, there's no extra labour costs. :)

Let us know what you find out!

um my car makes a squeaky sound when i press down on the front of the car, either side but its louder on driver side. Also when I'm driving with windows down and the car is quiet, I go over like a bump or over a concave part of the road quickly, I hear like air coming from the front like it sounds like a shock absorber sound lol. I have terrible bushings, dunno about the ball joints but the car is on eibach springs/stock teg shocks. Is this a sign it's going?

Well when you push down, how does it come up? Does it wave or stops quick? Does the car feel too soft and wavy on the road? That would be a sign of the damper being blown. Check upper balljoints and just check the whole front end of play.

The squeaking could be a bad ball joint. Mine squeaked but had zero play, and it was a bad ball joint.

Just beware.

If it is your ball joint, get it done asap! I work at a gas station, and one of the customers civic's ball joints gave in, and his suspension collapsed on him. Luckily it happened in the lot of the gas station.

^That actually happens more then you think. Kinda scary.
