Car is running rich, solutions??
It's a 99 GSR, with ITR cams..its running rich as a mofo. Burns a bit of oil and eats up gas like crazy.
Aside from the cams, the only other mods I have is a short ram intake and catback exhaust. After a few days of driving my bumper is almost black from the exhaust fumes... What should I do to prevent this or fix it? Any suggestions? |
get an ajustable FPR, and lower the Fuel Pressure, I would lean it out a tad, if you don't want to waste a lot of gas. If it was up to me, I'd let the mofo run rich and burn da bumpa. You can put some aluminum sheilding around the exhaust cutout.

Socket your ECU and run Uberdata, Chrome, Hondata, etc.
Put on a t00n3rz hat. |
Upgrading your ECU and a FPR as Sukh mentioned with the tuning that Juka mentioned should solve your problem and allow you to maximize the gains from your modifications.
In terms of upgrading the ECU what should I upgrade to?
Hondata priced out at about $600 at Gilman's
But Hondata doesn't come with a wideband for $600, now does it?
Apexi VAFC2, Apexi Power FC, Hondata S200, Spoon maybe?
I'm not sure which one is best. All I know is these are some electronic devices that may help. I think they allow you to adjust air to fuel ratio's between specific RPM's. I beleive with the Apexi Power FC (cost about $1000+) you can tune your air:fuel in 500 RPM incriments. Suhk or Juka probably know more about what they can do then me. |
Why would the addition of cams make the car run richer? Wouldn't something else have to be done to the car, like a chip, or some sort of device which would control fuel have to be used to increase the amount of fuel? Couldn't the richness be a result of some sort of mechanical problem like a faulty o2 sensor? Wouldn't you just be convering up the problem with VAFC, etc..., by leaning out the car if indeed the richness was due to a defective part on the car?

Before you tune it, your gonna need to fix the problem at hand first. If your bring in a broken car to get tuned and dyno'd they'll only turn you away or charge you labour for them to fix the problem.
Now from what I've seen in person is that you need a new catalytic convertor. If your cats gone your also gonna need a new 02 sensor. A new 2.5" diameter highflow carsound cat from John at Muffler Express is around $150. A new 02 sensor is $69.10 for the primary (Part #24172) and $189.00 for the secondary (Part #24546). http://clubplug.net/canada/ As you saw, I usually run crazy rich at auto-x and burned a lot of oil till I changed my 02 sensor. |
who said anything about a dyno to tune? You can tune it as you drive.
you can't tune with a busted 02 sensor and a narrowband one at that
I can probably get the Wideband to tune his car for free. If not we can always find someone willing to lend us a WideBand O2, and if he thinks his O2 is messed, we can get a Bosch from crappy tire for $40.
You bought a lemon Jonn.......
Wouldn't the correct thing to do is tune on a dyno and / or with a wide band o2? I would suggest a piggy back device (Hondata s200, APEX-i V-AFC, etc, etc) and get the thing tuned. A tuned car is a happy car.
My 2 cents. |

My 2 cents. He could go the cheaper route and get a Piggy Back and trick the computer. |
Im planning to get a header and a highflow cat, so should I just get the o2 sensor and just replace all of them at the same time??
If tuning it and whatnot is gonna make more power out of all the mods I have and make my car happy, then I guess I should tune it?
^ yes.

This thing eats gas like a mofo..Im talkin like 350kms a tank every damn week..
I put 20 dollars every 3 days in my old integra, I used to drive it about 50KM a day. This is Vtac for ya. Dude, I would literally use the Potential of Vtac and not worry about Gas. If your considering changing the make sure its really gone before you decide on paying $40 bucks to have the same thing happening.

Stock is good.
BTW on my Mine's ECU it has a Self Learning feature, and I noticed since I am using 94 Octane instead of 96 Octane it compromises for the lower octane issue by pushing more fuel, and now my car sucks gas like I drink Milk. Just letting you know.
Thats not a very good ecu if its just dumping more fuel to compensate for lower octane. It should be retarding timing......

Anyways back to the topic in hand. What does Jonn want to do?
Im gonna replace the cat and O2 Sensors first since its the cheapest solution and go from there..
you might want to consider looking into your Spark Plugs and Wires as well. If you haven't done so already.
I doubt you need to replace the cat. You'd get a CEL if it wasn't working properly..... the pre-cat and post-cat O2 sensor readings would be too similar.......
