Car died on the highway while going 120km/h

I was driving home from work at midnight doing 120km/h and all of a sudden the engine light came out and the car kept goin slower. So I slammed on the gas and all it did was reving the car. Then I tried to change it to 4th gear but all I can hear was my the cluth grinding. I know its impossible to stall the car while in motion but might as well try to start it up again. Clutch pressed down all the way, car was in neutral going 80km/h and then I turn the key. After many failed attempts, I gave up and parked at the shoulder of the highway and turned my 4 way on.

When I was at a full stop, I turned off the car, waited 10sec until i could try to start it again. I turned the key and all I can hear is the car hesitating but it wouldnt start. Later I disconnected my sound system and made sure the ignition wires were tight. After 3 more attempts, the car finally started up and I was able to drive home.

Does anyone have any clues why this happened????

ednyboo 05-23-2007 12:24 AM

Maybe some rat was stock in ur intake
But its good that you were at least able to control the car and pull over
I hope your car is alright

esguerra 05-23-2007 12:40 AM

let us know how it drives tomorrow...

tai_ 05-23-2007 12:54 AM

Its weird, when i got home and tried to start the car. It started on my first attempt fine, like nothing happened. I'm beginning to believe its electrical problem. My deck that I just put in a week ago might have shorted it out. Is it possible that a short can cause an engine light to go on?

SIC1 05-23-2007 01:10 AM

Is the CEL (check Engine light) on?

tai_ 05-23-2007 02:01 AM

Ya, CEL is on and all the other lights that turn on when you stall the car

SMOOTHE 05-23-2007 06:00 AM

^Does the CEL light stay on after you start the car?

djtrini 05-23-2007 07:00 AM

if your CEL light is staying on after you start the car and not going off, I wouldn't drive that car anywhere!

zman 05-23-2007 07:36 AM

check what the code is, then go from there, but without knowing what code its throwing throubleshooting will be a lot harder.
Go over all of the stereo wiring.

JDM_gsR 05-23-2007 07:42 AM

maybe you dizzy

tai_ 05-24-2007 12:17 AM

It happened to me again today... I was driving home, turning the stereo up pretty loud and after 5min of driving, the car died. This time i didn't take the highway but i was stuck in the middle of the road. So i turned my 4 way on, disconnected my stereo system and tighten the ignition wire. Tried to start the car again and still wouldn't start. Popped the hood up again and this time i made sure the ignition wire was really tight. Just in case it was the deck, i turned it off and remove the face plate. On the 2nd attempt, the car finally started.

The engine light turned off and i drove home safely. thank god....

Silver_Ac 05-24-2007 12:30 AM

your system is taking to much juice

tai_ 05-24-2007 01:09 AM

Is that even possible to drain soo much power that can make a car to shutdown while in motion. But it didn't drain the battery because i was able to start the car up after many attempts.

IntegratedGSR 05-24-2007 01:29 AM

check the code man and go from there.

Simo 05-24-2007 02:42 AM

sounds like your alternator is about to go

dc5r 05-24-2007 05:34 AM

i'd say alternator also.

mksliao 05-24-2007 07:18 AM

alternator

richie 05-24-2007 12:52 PM

if it was alternator the battery light would be on. does the battery light ever come on?

tai_ 05-24-2007 01:08 PM

nope, battery light never came on. I'm going to bring it to my mechanic today to get it checked.

tai_ 05-25-2007 03:00 AM

I brought it to my mechanic today and he said the alternator is feeding the battery fine even when I turned my system full blast. So i'm thinking it might be the dizzy or there is a short somewhere.

monies_gsr 05-25-2007 03:30 AM

could also be main relay

tai_ 05-26-2007 12:32 AM

Well, my car died on my again even when i disconnected my sound system. Now I know its not the system that is causing the car to die. It could be the main relay and dizzy as you guys suggested. Or it could be my alarm system that came with the car. When I hit a big bump the car dies and also, it could be the vibration of my sound system that cause a short.

I hope its the alarm system so that i can just unplug it.

riding_young 05-26-2007 01:09 AM

Relay!!!

Its the Relay for sure because the last Integra I had, had a pretty loud sound system and my car used to turn off just the way you described but after I found out it had nothing to do with that because i completely took it off one day and put the stock deck back as well but it happened again because the board on the relay has some points soldered on it which losen up or just need to be resoldered or you can just replace the relay because it will keep happening because your sound system has already shown its affect on the Relay...this mechanic I know fixed it for me temporarily for $30 but 3 months later, it started happening again, so its better to replace it now or clean the board good and solder some of the points again and repeat it after a while if you wish to lol!!!

tai_ 05-26-2007 02:27 PM

How much does it cost for a whole new relay and where is the relay located?? under the hood or below the steering wheel?

Rrebel YO 05-26-2007 06:34 PM

after you get all this sorted out...if your battery is pooched let me know :yeah:

depending on the age of your teg i may be able to get you an Optima battery that will support your car and your system with ease with no power problems (if that turns out to be the case of course)

tai_ 05-26-2007 07:40 PM

It happened to me again today!!! I didn't touch anything for 5min and started the car up fine......Relay or dizzy... I think i'm just going to bring to my mechanic to figure it out. Getting too frustrated thinking about it.

tai_ 05-27-2007 11:58 PM

I am 90% sure it is the alarm. i just had to play alarm with the alarm when my car died. Eventually the car started up fine.

Now I need to figure out how to disconnect the alarm...There is no extra wire that is connected to the battery and I have no clue where the alarm is connected to.

Does anyone know?

WildoutWhiteGSR 05-28-2007 09:23 AM

Bring it to audio heaven

Acuman 05-31-2007 07:53 PM

I could be the fuel pump relay. When they go bad the car will give trouble starting until it cools down. It's located in the left drivers side somewhere near the dead petal (basically a grey box). I had to have mine changed late last year as the car would sometimes stall (but not at highway speed) and would not start until a slight cooldown. It takes probably about a minute to change. Have it checked first. The part is about $40 to $60 USD.

tai_ 05-31-2007 11:32 PM

Thx for the info man, but it turned out to be the dizzy. I've been driving for 2 days without the car shutting off randomly.
