bad wheel bearings blamed on aftermarket rims

well, my 2002 SiR is in having the wheel bearing on the front passenger side replaced. the driver's side was replaced in december. both are covered under warrantee, but i was told that because i have bigger/wider rims it is probably the cause so if it happens again they won't replace it. the rims are 17"x7" with a 42 offset.
anyone else having this issue? i think this is a load of shite.

yes it does have an effect, with experience and couple of my friends, when putting aftermarket rims it causes the bearings to go prematurley

caused by what? extra weight?

SMOOTHE Oct 18, 2006 05:28 PM

I've heard of bearings wearing faster due to being lowered but not having bigger rims???

canttx Oct 18, 2006 05:44 PM

never heard of that before. just swap out the rims if anything happens again and take it back.

i heard that too along with not running hubcentric rings on your aftermarket wheels.

what kind of noise would a bearing make when blown? im having trouble still with a noise. could it be compared to a ball joint?

run a ground wire to your knuckles and they'll last longer

humming then turns to a grinding when it gets really serious. sometimes you'll feel a shaking like a tire is out of balance.

Another way to notice if your bearings are fucked is the sound related to a whole in a muffler/exhaust system. Eg the faster you go the louder it gets.

Just replaced mine in my accord cost me 240 for parts alone lol. Labour was 50 bux at a ghetto shop lol.

I need mine done also. Put OEM rims on and go to another honda dealership.

Added weight, improper balancing/mounting, different diameter and changing the offset will all have an effect on your bearings. Remember, your wheel/tire combo acts like a torque arm on your hub and bearings.

bj and wheel bearing make completely different noises. bearings make a humming/grinding, bj's make a thump or a faint queek sometimes. There are a few ways to check if a bearing is bad, using a stethoscope (which will only work if they bearing is pretty worn because it needs load to hum if its minor damage), play in the wheel (in/out) or if you are at a shop and have abs you can actually check the frequency of some bearings by using the speed sensor.

Aaron, some tech's will exaggerate certain things to make your warranty void, this is one of those cases. I know this because from experience

Strikes me as a good idea!
