Aftermarket tach is off :S
...so my car came with a 4'' tach with shift light when i bought it, but the tach is like double what my rpm actualy is... well when the motor is reving around 3 grand the aftermarket tach says 10grand :S not a big deal i dont need it but would be nice for it to work proper, iv been reading the chevy 3rd Gen fourms and it seems ALOT of people have this problem but NOONE knows how to go about fixing it?? has anyone else had this problem or got some advice? thanks alot.

Just take off the aftermarket tach and light, they are gay when you have a OEM one on your cluster that works fine.
|
if you car is older, its usually hooked up the same way you oem one is, via your distributer. you could re install it and see what happens.

Depending on how much of a hackjob the previous owner did in installing it, you probably do have a bad connection somewhere, or it's not set up properly somehow.
Both my car and my buddy's civic have horrendous wiring jobs in them by the previous owners. Unbelievably bad. lol |
omg lmao i cant even begin to go on about wiring jobs, i can only ware converse to drive with, NONE of my other shoes will reach my clutch bechause theres a HUUGEEE bundle of wires under the dash there all zip tied together, i tried to move them up the other day and kept getting shocked by something so im gona wait till its nicer out to unhook my battery and rip everything out

Amazing! For me, the previous owner ran power and RCA's for an audio setup, both through the center console, and sliced open the trunk carpet to bring out the cables (which, mind you, are too short). He also sliced open the bit of carpet covering the rear seat, and mounted an amplifier there. With one screw.
At least the deck was done somewhat properly, not like we found my buddy's car - with wires wrapped around each other and covered in electrical tape. |
ROFL ohh when i got the deck in mine, well the deck didnt work that came with the car but i didnt care i had my own, but he had little metal prongs on the ends of the wires that came out of the deck i think it was and pushed them into the stock harness, or it was the other way around?
iv pulled out 2 sets of RCA cables that were no good, theres a few random wires with power that are under my dash that arnt hooked upto anything either :S it surprises me they even went thru the trouble to "try" and hide the wires haha |
It's just one of those things where you step back and say "No, I am an incompetent idiot so I will not attempt such things". And then you have it installed professionally, and you make future owners happy :D

lol ya so far iv had to replace the master cylinder for the brakes, had to get a new rad cuz the old one was rotted and i put a hole in it :S
the guy put lowering springs on the front and not the back but i got the rear springs, so my camber is all fucked up, i got a shop to semi fix it but need a camber kit for spring. my brake pads are garbage, and im still making a list of ---- lol, by the time im done itll literally be a brand new car -_- |
well im gona go outside and fix up a few things, its really nice out.
im gona try to fix the tach first off and check my belts, does anyone know if i should take my distributer off?? whould it the tach be conected inside? just wondering where to start? |
follow the distributor wiring. look behind the tach to see if there's a switch for 4/6/8 cylinder. that' might be set wrong. IMHO, just take it out.
|
iv played with the wiring and iv now got it down to HALF of what my real RPM reads, i havent looked behind my tach yet ill do that today, thanks.
on another note, ill post a pic of how the dude wired this thing latter lmao |
1 Attachment(s)
Okay well heres the pic as to how the guy wired it...
Attachment 11930 if this isnt the right way and someone knows what wires to conect and what not lmk, cuz its only reading half the real rpm -_- cant i splice into the tach wires behind my cluster? :S |
Yes you should be able to but the wire from the aftermarket tach to the postive side of the oem tach, and it should read on the aftermarket tach. That's how I have always done them on my 240sx's.
|
Wow, nice wire job he did:P
|
All the wires in the car are done like that, i get shocked on everything in there >_<
but thanks to buff, something that never crossed my mind was flick the switch on the back of the tach, thanks alot man haha it worked :D damn i feel like an idiot |
