**RUST!** I hate it!! Anyone else have this problem?!

My car has a custom paint job but I never got it rustproofed. It has been okay until this year...this is the first winter i'm driving it and suddenly all these little parts of my car are starting to RUST!!!! My rear bumper above my right tail light, both sides all along my rear wheel well (i removed the plastic piece and its still rusting!), and the corners and tips of things, ie, my doors, etc.

My poor Teggy has cancer :(

Anyways, so I brought it in to my body shop about 2 monhts ago and they sanded the little spots down and repainted those panels. And just last week, I noticed that those little spots are reappearing again, and new spots on other parts of the car has rust now too!! They first start off as bumps then they rust through.

Its driving me crazy cuz I like my car immaculate, no scratches, dings, dents etc. But I can't stop the rusting.... Any tips??? Are there any DIY- quick-fix-em rust proofing things that you guys recommend??

Thanks.
Lisa

should have rustproofed in the beginning

i'd say just go to a body shop piece the metal where ever its rusting. And get it rust proofed, other than that i don't know a possible way to stop the rust once it starts.

This only applies if you have Money &/or TIME:

Replace the parts (if possible) - Brand new or close to immaculate as possible
- find online, salvage yards B/S/T of car/automotive forums - I know I have found crazy deals, THEN RUSTPROOF IT.

Cut out rusted used parts and weld replacement metal/plastic etc THEN RUSTPROOF IT.

If you broke/lazy/cheap, sell the POS integra and get late model car. 01 and up. with no rust and THEN RUSTPROOF IT.

preventative measure could have saved you a lot especially since you knew you were going to use it in the winter. You can always buy the spray can version of anything that a shop does. i.e. rust check comes in aerosol can form. It's ghetto but it works ;)

i think it's called RUSTPROOF for a reason.

the only place i have rust is the 1/4 panels. Rotted both sides. replacing in the spring if i keep the car. then rust proofing!!!!!!

best thing to do is to pull off the rear bumper and the interior side panels to see how bad the rust is. if it's just surface rust, you can just grind it down. the most common area for it to start rusting is the rear of the arch, where the bumper attaches to the quarter panel. another common spot if at the 7 o'clock position right above the rocker panel extension. the rust usually starts to develop between the quarter panel fold and the wheel well housing, the seam where it is covered by the rubber strip.

the shitty way for a body shop to do it is to grind it down and weld sheetmetal in place and cover it with bondo. the only problem is usually it's done half assed and painted half assed too where they only paint the visible part that you can see, leaving the bondoed area you can't see suspectible to the elements leading to rust again. when i had my car painted 4 years ago, they did just that, and now it's starting to bubble at the 12 o'clock position where the quarter panel meets the wheel well. the bumper also was hanging as the hole that attaches it to the quarter panel was rusted away.

the proper way to do it is to either weld in either rust free metal from a donor shell or simple replace the quarterpanels, both of which are very labor intensive.

...thanks. I've decided that i'm just going to replace both panels on both sides. But i've got shaved mouldings so that means I gotta look for ITR panels...ARGH! Adding to the stress...little by little.

JayBRO 01-20-2006 06:05 PM

^^ Which "panels" are you talking about?

Girlie_Integ 01-20-2006 08:15 PM

I'm talking about the 2 rear panels, the long piece which encompasses the part over the gas tank, over the rear wheels, and goes all the way over your door.

HyBrId 01-26-2006 11:48 AM

that whole thing is rusted???

i thought u just had rust in the wheel wells area...if so then u dont need to find ITR 3/4 panels...jus get any 3/4 panel cuz ur gonna cut the rusted section out of ur 3/4 and cut out the same section from the donar panel and weld it on...

or find a shop thats good with metal work and they can probably jus make a replacement peice for the rusted area...

not sure wats cheaper...ive jus started lookin into this for spring...

Girlie_Integ 01-26-2006 07:45 PM

You're right...i just got a good look at that piece and its big and cumbersome. I've never thought of that...getting just the wheel well re-welded on.

thahks for the suggestion.

I cured the cancer on my 91 GS, but I am working on my 92 GS which is beyond CHEMO therapy. Almost every 1990-93 Teg that I have seen has the same rust spots by the wheel wells, side rubber trim by the doors, the mounts for the spoiler, and around the edges of the door handles. Thank god my friends own a body shop and I get to work on my car when there is a bay open!
