DIY: Clean Your Engine Bay

This is a write up i did for TCC when i had my civic, itsa the same idea for ANY car

b4 i start, this is only a guideline, and i'm not resposible for anything goin worng wit your car, use at you own discretion

there has been discussion and descriptions, but no pictures, so i decided to cleen out the durty ass engine bay and take sum pictures...here we go

this is realy the only step thats critical- coverin everythin (i prob din have to cover the stock airbox, but i did anyways:

Dont forget the alternator:

when everything is covered, spray a lil water all over the engine bay, and after bout a mintue, spray on a heavy coat of cleaner, i used GUNK (citrus powered :howudoin: )

now if ur engine bay looks lyk ass then the tooth brush wont cut it

http://tinypic.com/5le3cy

Neither will this brush thing

http://tinypic.com/5le3jo

so u'r gna have to get serious, and bring out the steel wool

Gettin better:

ow wash it all down completelty trying not to focus the water on any sensors, or belts

Final result:

yes i kno its not so cleen u could eet off it, i jus wanted to make it half decent cause i'm selling it soon

make sure to remove the plastic bags b4 driving the car, and after rinsing it down completely start it and let the water evaporate, its not smoke its steam, and if u'r that paranoid sit in the car and watch the temp gauge, you car will smell lyk oven cleaner for a while but it will go away

and there you go, frum durtly lik sh*t, do half decent, it took me bout 45 mins, if u take u'r time u could make it reely cleen and nice and all that other nice stuff

hope that helps..happy cleaning

p.s. if any1 has anything to add or correct feel free.

DO NOT use steel wool on your integra valve covers, you will take off the paint. and DO NOT use it on any paint in the engine bay, u will end up scratching the paint right off.

you can use a cloth or even the mitts u buy to wash your car, or a sponge works good too

a good finishing step i've heard of is to grab a can of that armorall tire shine foam and spray it all over the bay, gets everything looking all nice and new.

TwoSix 01-31-2006 05:38 PM

^sum ppl use leather polish too

HyBrId 02-02-2006 12:46 AM

sum products may affect the rubber pieces or electrical connectors so be careful...like sum ppl stray wd40 over the engline bay so thats its all shiny but if u get it on ur rad hoses they will harden up and crack over time...

well u do know that dealership don't even crover anything in the engine bay up right??? well i know Honda/Acura doesnt... we just spray acid all over your engine bay and use the power washer and spray it all down and blow it all dry close the hood and let u know....
we do this when the car is still running... and everything is still in good workin con after... that will save u some time so u dont have to crover up anything =)

no1 is tellin u to take the holes and spray it right at the dis, alt.... but its just mostly the engine, firewall, battary and fuels box...

Thats right, take some of that tire stuff and apply it to your intake arm, and all other black rubber areas... it will shine and look new.

My last car, i hosed it down.. next thing i know.. my dizzy was making noises and took a dump! definetly cover that up!

Wrap up the harness in a garbage bag, or use a steam cleaner.

i know a lot of you guys thought of tire shine to make it all shiny at the end...
but over the period when dusts accumulate it will grab and will look like ----...
here is a suggestion go to crappy tire... and buy the soooo called "Engine Finish"...
it is a clear coat for engine... will look nice trust me.. some of you or maybe all of you might know this... if not.. TRY!!! wont be dissapointed...
